Types of Actuators

Actuators are mechanical or electro-mechanical devices that provide controlled and limited movements or positioning which can be operated electrically, manually or by various fluids. The two basic motions are linear and rotary. The linear actuators can convert energy into the straight line motions. The positioning for the application have a push and pull function which gives it more power. Some linear actuators can be unpowered and they can be manually operated by the use of a rotating knob or a hand wheel. The rotary actuator can convert energy to provide the rotary motion.  Each individual actuator type has a version for various power configurations and they come in many styles and sizes depending on the application.




Here are the different types of actuators that are commonly used in plants:

  • Electric linear
  • Electric rotary
  • Fluid power linear
  • Fluid power rotary
  • Linear chain actuators
  • Manual linear
  • Manual rotary

Powered actuators are incorporated motors, cylinders and other motion devices to produce rotation or linear translation. The rack and pinion arrangements, ball screws and other kinds of power transmission components are connected to the motor to generate more energy to load. The actuators are separated by the motion and the power source. The linear actuators produce the push and pull action.

The rotary actuators produce a rotational motion which ensures the performance of the linear actuators can begin with a rotary prime mover as well as the motor. The rotation is converted to the linear motion through a power screw or a similar device. A lot of rotary actuators can begin with a linear device such as a hydraulic cylinder which can provide circular motion through a rack and a pinion arrangement.
